Drug & Drop, formally known as Legal Drug (合法 ドラッグ Gōhō Doraggu), is a currently ongoing manga by CLAMP first serialized in Asuka. The series was put on hold in 2003, as the magazine it was serialized in ceased its publication. It resumed serialization in November 2011 in Kadokawa's Young Ace Magazine under the new title, Drug and Drop (ドラッグ&ドロップ).

A campaign ran in Newtype magazine, along with Kobato., promoting the series. This new manga "Drug and Drop" starting from new numeration to chapters, reveal the past of Kazahaya and Rikuou, well as what is behind the "Green Drug", the mysterious drugstore for which they work.

PlotEdit

Legal Drug revolves around a young boy named Kazahaya Kudo, who is rescued by a mysterious young man named Rikuou Himura after collapsing in the snow and facing near death. Rikuou then takes him to a pharmacy, Green Drugstore, and Kazahaya is given a job and accomodation by Kakei, the store's owner. Their day job is simple, as they are treated and act like regular drugstore employees. But together, they are forced into doing "odd jobs" for Kakei which often deal with the supernatural and/or making use of their supernatural powers. The CLAMP "universe" in which Legal Drug takes place is also the same universe that xxxHOLiC, Wish, Kobato, and Suki Dakara Suki take place in.

Characters Edit

Kazahaya Kudo (栩堂 風疾 Kudō Kazahaya) - The main protagonist of the series, noted to be 17 years old at the start of the series. Above all else, Kazahaya does not want to die - a fact which seems to be linked to a girl in his past named Kei, who is implied to be his sister. In the beginning of the series, Kazahaya is found lying in the snow, having apparently run away from his foster home and is on the verge of freezing to death. After being found by Rikuou and taken to the Green Drugstore, he becomes an employee there, in hopes that he can make enough money so that he may one day live alone. He has supernatural powers, allowing him to see the "memories" of person or thing when he touches them, similar to psychometry. He also seems to posseses empathtic abilities, being able to absorb people's emotions, as well as their memories. On at least one occasion, he was able to channel the present visual prespective of another person, that person being Rikuou. Kazahaya has a quick temper and gets emotional easily. He has cat-like characteristics, having heightened sense of smell and vision, and even looking like an angry cat when upset. His appearence in great contrast to Rikuou's, appearing smaller, slimmer, and much more feminine looking.

Rikuou Himura (火群 陸王 Himura Rikuō) - The second protagonist of the seires, Rikuou is Kazahaya's current co-worker, roommate and partner on their missions. Similar to Kazahaya, his past is centered on a woman, her being named Tsukiko. Tsukiko is later found out as Rikuou's older sister, and it was also revealed that they lived together at one point, without any parents. Rikuou often come across as cold and insensitive, and even sarcastic. Despite taking great pleasure in teasing Kazahaya, he always comes to Kazahaya's rescue whenever certain jobs go wrong. He has supernatural powers similar to telekinesis, as he is able to break things like locks, which is very helpful on his and Kazahaya's missions. He and Kazahaya are said to be the same age. In appearence, Rikuou is much taller and more masculine than Kazahaya, and unlike Kazahaya, he is much more calmer and quieter. He is popular with high school girls, who often come to Green Drugstore just to get an opportunity to talk to him. Rikuou has tattoos on his right shoulder and back, which have been implied to have a connection with Tsukiko. A fun fact about Rikuou is that he likes chocolate and other sweets, which is considered unusual and un-masculine in Japanese society, especially considering his very masculine image.

Kakei (花蛍) - The owner of Green Drugstore, and the one sends Kazahaya and Rikuou on missions, usually without telling them all the details first. He appears to know how events will take place, due to his ability of prerecognition, however it is noted that his power cannot be used on someone more powerful than himself. Kakei appears to be a kind, gentle person, with good intentions. However, he is noted to have a a cruel, and even sadistic side to his nature, although this side of his personality is mostly actualized in almost-subtle teasing. According to Kakei, the reason he opened the Green Drugstore was so that he could protect everyone he cares about.

Saiga (斎峨) - Kakei's lover who is often found hanging around the drugstore in the daytime, usually napping, smoking, or both. He is always seen wearing a pair of sunglasses, which he never seems to take off. While it doesn't seem like he has any supernatural powers, it's been noted that he's extremely good at finding things, even trying to help Rikuou find Tsukiko. He is skilled in domestic areas, such as sewing and cooking.

Crossovers Edit

The CLAMP "universe" in which Legal Drug takes place in is the same "universe" in which xxxHOLiC, Wish, Kobato., and Suki Dakara Suki take place in, as well. The store Piffle Princess often appearing in many CLAMP works appeared in Legal Drug vol. 2 as a clothing store in whcih Kazahaya purchases clothes for a girl named Hinata Asahi, attending Outo High School in exchange for uniform. Hinata is the protagonist from CLAMP's Suki Dakara Suki. Hinata, her teacher Shirou Asou, and the entire setting of Outo High School all appear in Suki Dakara Suki. This same high school appears in Kobato. vol. 6, with Kobato herself wearing the school's uniform. Green Drugstore, along with silhouettes of Legal Drug's characters, often appear in the background of Kobato. At one point in time, Kiyokazu Fujimoto of Kobato. takes a part time job at Legal Drug's Green Drugstore, wearing a bunny costume and handing out cough drop samples, along with another world version of Touya Kinomoto of Cardcaptor Sakura, who is known for his various part-time jobs. In xxxHOLiC, both Rikuou and Kazahaya appear when Kimihiro Watanuki goes to buy a hangover remedy for Yuko Ichihara. Due to his ability to see spirits, Watanuki sees two ghostly images around them (presumebly Tsukiko and Kei) and notes that the two have a strong bond. In vol. 5 of xxxHOLiC, the High Moon Urn obtained by Yuko from the "anything store" is the same urn retrieved by Kazahaya and Rikuou in vol. 2 of Legal Drug. It can also be noted that the street light pole/wall space that leads to different dimensions is walked through by Watanuki and Yuko of xxxHOL

In CLAMP in Wonderland 2, the characters of Legal Drug are animated, along with Green Drugstore. Only Kazahaya and Rikuou had been animated previously, making appearences in the anime adaptation of xxxHOLiC, episode 6, and it's sequel xxxHOLiC Kei, episode 13.

Chapter 15 from Drug & Drop reveals that; Saiga is Kokuyou (Wishウィッシュ), and Kakei is Hisui (Wishウィッシュ).

Publication Edit

Legal Drug first ran in Kadokawa Shoten's Asuka in 2000. It ran until 2003 when it was placed on hiatus by CLAMP after Asuka ceased its publication. At the time, only 1/5 of the intended story had been released. When asked about Legal Drug's status at 2006 Anime Expo, Nanase Ohkawa explicitly stated that "CLAMP will be resuming it in the future." It was then announced that starting November 4th 2011, the series would resume in Kadokawa's seinen magazine Young Ace after it's 8 year hiatus, with a the new title "Drug and Drop". CLAMP then launched a campaign in Newtype along with Kobato., promoting the series. Legal Drug's three volumes are to be re-released starting October with brand new cover illustrations, all drawn by Legal Drug's main artist, Tsubaki Nekoi.

All three volumes have been released in the U.S. by Tokyopop. Tokyopop has since shut down, Dark Horse Comics will be re-releasing Legal Drug's 3 volumes in Omnibus on September 10, 2014, and then they will start publication of Drug & Drop in 2015.
